It’s Official: March is “Kids’ Chance Awareness Month” in Florida
So glad to hear this! Our Florida chapter of Kids’ Chance has raised nearly $170,000 in scholarships since its inception in 2015. As reported in WorkersCompensation.com:
Tallahassee, FL (WorkersCompensation.com) – The Florida Cabinet Tuesday passed a resolution declaring March 2021 to be “Kids’ Chance Awareness Month.” This was in honor of Kids’ Chance of Florida, Inc., for “their assistance in supporting the children of Florida’s injured workers.” The Florida Cabinet consists of Governor Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, Commissioner of Agriculture Nicole Fried, and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis. Patronis was the one to offer the resolution to the Cabinet for consideration.
Kids’ Chance of Florida, Inc. (KCFL) is a 501(c)3 non-profit that provides scholarships and educational opportunities to children with a parent who has been seriously or fatally injured on the job. They are supported largely by volunteers and companies from the workers’ compensation industry. Since their inception in 2015, they have issued $169,250 in scholarships to children of Florida’s injured workers. They are a member in good standing with Kids’ Chance of America, which now supports organizations in 50 states.
Representing Kids’ Chance of Florida at the Cabinet Meeting were board members Jim Mcconnaughhay, Andrew Sabolic, Judge David Langham, and Robert Wilson. The group also included Ashlyn Langford, a 3rdYear Physics Major at Florida State University. Langford is a KCFL Scholarship recipient. Wilson had a moment to address the cabinet, where he told them that the action would help with one of the organization’s most difficult objectives, reaching the families who would qualify for their program. He told the cabinet that the resolution will help other young men and women in the state realize that “their college dreams can be a reality, and that a workplace injury does not have to injure their college career or their future.”
The resolution applauds the group for their “outstanding work to ensure our Florida families have the ability to give their children an opportunity at a higher education in the face of adversity.” Nationwide, Kids’ Chance organizations have collectively awarded over 8,000 scholarships totaling more than $27,000,000 since 1988.
